Programme 2010: Bertrand Russell Room

11am

Sally Reith - Investing in a Fairer World
Unique Investment and/or volunteering opportunities within fair trade finance.
As the South East Supporter Relations Officer for Shared Interest my role is to increase membership and support for Shared Interest so that we can lend more money to fair trade businesses in the developing world. After finishing a Masters in Social Development at the University of Sussex I joined Shared Interest in November 2008 which has enabled me to develop my awareness of fair trade. Having spent some time volunteering in Tanzania I became interested in the concept of giving a helping hand rather than a hand out, something I feel fair trade has at its heart. I hope to continue raising interest and investment in Shared Interest and having visited South Africa with our charitable arm, Shared Interest Foundation, I see the real demand for what we do and the duty we have to continue to meet this demand.

Brigit Strawbridge - Bee Aware
assisted by Louise Watson
The decline in the bee population is well covered in the media, but it's not only honeybees that are suffering. In this inspiring and informative talk, Brigit Strawbridge explains the importance of (and difference between) social and solitary bees, the problems they face and how you can help them out in your back gardens and allotments. NB this talk is NOT about beekeeping! The 'Bumblebee Conservation Trust' is a good source for anyone who wants further information about bees.
Brigit Strawbridge moved with her family to a smallholding in Cornwall in 2005, where their endeavours to live a more sustainable lifestyle were the subject of the BBC2 series "Itís Not Easy Being Green". Following the screening of the series in 2006 Brigit moved back to Malvern, Worcestershire, where she founded "The Big Green Idea" charity to help show people how simple and inexpensive it can be to live a green and ethical life. Over the last couple of years Brigit has become increasingly concerned about the plight of our native bees - and now talks, writes and campaigns to raise awareness of the problems they face.

Gregory Sams - The Sun as a Conscious Being
It's the most important thing in our lives and the most ancient and widely recognized deity on the planet. Yet it's not even a blip on today's religious radar screen. Earth's giver of light and life - the Sun! Greg will be re-introducing us to our local star as a celestial being, there in the sky for all to see. In the light of current solar science, belief in a conscious Sun makes more sense than ever, while the senseless ball of gas becomes less and less credible. It's time to lift the lid off the biggest cover-up of all time. Here comes the Sun!
Gregory has been in the business of changing things since 1967 when, with brother Craig, he opened up the market for organic and natural foods in the UK. Fifteen years later he conceived and christened the first VegeBurger, an idea that spread. Then he left food for fractals, opening the only shop ever devoted to new science chaos theory, publishing and licensing fractals worldwide. Chaos led to his first book, Uncommon Sense – the State is Out of Date. And then to the taboo-busting Sun of gOd, Discover the Self-Organizing Consciousness That Underlies Everything.

Paradox - One Legged Existential Stand-up Beat Poetry
assisted by Pemma Ashdown
A rhythmical, intense, provocative, tongue-in-cheek (and hopefully inspirational) poetic exploration of the human experience.
Since becoming a Performance Poet, Compare, Speaker and Workshop facilitator in 2002 I have explored and experimented with a wide range self & planet empowering, practices, systems, models and lifestyles. Since almost dying and losing my leg a couple of years ago, these ways of being have been put to the ultimate test...and most were found wanting. This real time, real world separating of the "wheat from the chaff" has led to a distillation of and focusing on the core experiencial and existential truths that have empowered me...and I feel can empower others...to live a more deeply meaningful life.
